LEARN TO WINDSURF
THE BEST TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
Choosing a Location
For windsurfing beginners, ideal location is key. Look for a small lake or lagoon 100-200 yards across. Find a place where the wind is blowing parallel to the shore for easier sailing on a reach or across the wind. Avoid areas with powerboats and their wakes, and don't try to learn in the ocean.
Wind Strength and Direction
Ideal windspeed for learning is around 3-5 mph and should blow parallel to the shore. Avoid places with strong winds (above 7-10 mph) and powerboat wakes. Do not learn in the ocean, start with a small lake or lagoon. If the wind is blowing directly offshore, use a tether line or be prepared to disassemble your rig and paddle back. The wind should approach the location unobstructed, avoid areas with large buildings or trees up-wind.
Practicing on Land
Get a feel for the wind's pull on your windsurfing rig by assembling the mast, booms, and sail on the shore before trying it in water. Place the mast base on sand or grass, hoist the sail and let it flutter, imagining the board's direction. Stand with both feet on the board's centerline, each side of the mast, then pull in the sail. Practicing on shore gives valuable experience and confidence without the added challenges of balance and waves in the water.
Proper Body Position for Sailing
When starting out, keep your front arm bent at the elbow. Use your sheet hand to adjust the sail's pull by releasing or pulling in. Stand with a straight back and shoulders, without bending at the waist. Keep the boom near your chest to keep the mast centered on the board. Keep your front leg straight and pointed forward to drive the board, while slightly bending your rear leg to maintain balance. In strong winds, move your feet closer to the windward rail and lean back to counteract the increased sail pull.
